Putnam Valley 17-Year-Old Charged With DWI
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the January 21, 2007 arrest of Karl Lange, 17, of Putnam Valley, on a drunk driving charge in the same Town. A deputy sheriff arrested Mr. Lange after stopping him for a traffic violation.
The Sheriff reports that at about 12:15am on January 21st, Deputy Sheriff Jesse Wollman was patrolling along Oscawana Lake Road in Putnam Valley when he observed a vehicle in the opposite lane swerve into his lane of travel. Deputy Wollman stopped the car and found Mr. Lange at the wheel. During the ensuing exchange, the deputy became suspicious that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and administered several field sobriety tests to him, which the defendant failed.
Deputy Wollman arrested the defendant on misdemeanor charges of Driving While Intoxicated ("DWI") and Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Level Greater than .08%. Mr. Lange was also issued a traffic summons for moving unsafely from the lane. The defendant was processed at Sheriff's Office headquarters and released without bail pending a future court appearance in the Putnam Valley Justice Court.
If convicted of the misdemeanor charges, Mr. Lange could face up to a year in jail, a $1000 fine, and sanctions against his privilege to drive in New York on each charge.
