Pianist Andreas Haefliger to Perform at Howland Center
The Howland Chamber Music Circle's highly successful 2007 Piano Festival concludes on February 18 with a performance by Andreas Haefliger, continuing his "Perspectives of Beethoven" series.
Andreas Haefliger has received the highest praise throughout the world for performances that possess a rare combination of power, elegance and poetry. A musical thinker whose interpretations spring from a rich cultural heritage, he is a consummate artist and one of the leading pianists of his generation.
In the 2006/07 season, Mr. Haefliger continues the third year of his personal "Perspectives of Beethoven" series, in which he plays the complete Beethoven piano works with related compositions. "Perspectives" recital dates this season include appearances in Texas, New Mexico, Maryland, and at the Getty Museum in California, where the musical exploration will be complemented by an exhibition of German painters from Dresden: "From Caspar David Friedrich to Gerhard Richter". Mr. Haefliger also concertizes in Prague, Rotterdam, Zurich, and will perform in concert with the the Flemish Radio Orchestra. Recent appearances took him across Europe and the United States, as well as to Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Born in Switzerland, Andreas Haefliger grew up in a musical household. After completing his studies at the Juilliard School, where he was twice awarded the Gina Bachauer Memorial Scholarship, he made his London recital debut at the Wigmore Hall in 1993 and his London Proms debut with the Philharmonia in 1994.
For his concert at the Howland Center, Mr Haefliger has chosen to play two sonatas by Beethoven, the D Major, Opus 28, the "Pastoral" and the f minor, Opus 57, the "Appassionata", and Franz Schubert's Sonata in B-flat Major.
The concert will take place on Sunday, February 18, at 4pm at the Howland Center, 477 Main Street Beacon, and will be followed by a reception to meet the artist.
