County Players Presents The Cocktail Hour

County Players 49th season continues to entertain its audiences with A.R. Gurney's The Cocktail Hour, opening on Friday, February 9 at 8pm. The Cocktail Hour takes place during the mid 70's in a city in upstate New York. John (played by Michael Frohnhoeffer) is a playwright who returns to his family's house bringing with him a new play, which he has written about them. John wants to obtain their permission to proceed with the production, but his wealthy and very proper parents (played by Philipstown's Bill Hicks and by Patricia Affron) are cautious from the outset. For them the theatre is personified by the gracious, comforting era of the Lunts and Ina Claire, and they are disturbed by the bluntness of modern plays.

John's sister Nina (Dianne Carney) has reservations about his play because John has given her character such a minor role. Their confrontation takes place during the ritual of the cocktail hour, and as the martinis flow so do the recriminations and revelations. It becomes evident that what John has written is closer to the truth than his family has heretofore been willing to admit. But while they seem shackled by the past, and tantalized by an alien future, the ties which bind them do prevail - surmounting disputes and disappointments and, with unfailing warmth and humor, converting pained resignation into cautious but hopeful anticipation.

The Cocktail Hour is directed by County Player veteran Jeff Wilson. Jeff previously directed Mornings at Seven, The Fantasticks, and Lost in Yonkers for CP. "I'm thrilled to be directing again and working with such a talented cast and crew. A.R. Gurney is one of my favorite playwrights, and I believe this is one of his best written shows."

Subsequent performances will be February 10, 16, 17, 23, and 24 at 8pm and February 18 at 2pm. Tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and children under 12 years of age. Call the box office at 845-298- 1491 for reservations. Visa and MasterCard are accepted. County Players Falls Theatre is located at 2681 W. Main, Wappingers Falls.
