Officer Burris and his K9 Partner Place 2nd in USPCA Regional Trials
Team to be flown to MN this spring for national competition

The Village of Cold Spring Police K-9 Officer Darrell Burris and his K9 partner Duncan, placed 2nd in the United States Police Canine Association's "USPCA" regional trials. Burris and Duncan beat out 16 out of 17 teams from New York and Connecticut in the Region 7 Narcotics Detector Trials at the Orange County Sheriff's K-9 Academy in Montgomery.

Burris and Duncan achieved a perfect score on their vehicle search trials, in which they were instructed to search 5 vehicles, 3 of which contained narcotics. They got a near perfect score in the searching of 4 rooms, 3 of which contained hidden narcotics.

To certify and qualify, some of the areas USPCA judges look for are: the proficiency in the locating and indication by the K9 of hidden illegal narcotics within the allotted time, the ability of the handler to be able to properly identify when his/her K9 has located a find, the obedience of the K9 to his/her handler's commands as well as a thorough and proper search pattern and technique.

The team will be flown to Cloquet Minn. this May to compete against law enforcement K-9 teams from across the United States at the USPCA national detector trails.

Officer Burris dedicates his success and this honor of attending the national trials to Sgt. David Campbell, (Retired), and Deputy James Cleary, both from the Orange County Sheriff's Office K9 Academy, and to Sergeant William Finucane of the MTA Police for all their hard work, dedication and training abilities they give to all of the K9 teams who train at the Orange County K9 Academy.
