Sheriff to Hold Citizens' Police Academy
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office will be conducting its bi-annual Citizens' Police Academy beginning in March, Putnam County Sheriff Don Smith has announced. The Academy program is a ten-week course. The Academy will consist of weekly classes that will meet on Thursdays beginning March 8, 2007, and concluding on May 10, 2007. Classes will be held at the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services headquarters from 6pm to 9pm each Thursday evening.
Participants in the Citizens' Police Academy will receive instruction in various law enforcement topics. Academy instructors will lecture and provide demonstrations on a broad range of subjects, to include police procedures, investigations, forensics, corrections, and civil process.
"The goal of the Citizens' Police Academy is to educate and raise civic awareness about the functions of law enforcement in general and the workings of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office in particular," said Sheriff Smith. "Informing citizens about public safety and law enforcement issues builds closer bonds between citizens and police and those bonds strengthen the community," he said.
Sheriff Smith said that the Academy will be limited to approximately thirty (30) participants, citing space limitations and other logistical factors. .
Persons interested in finding out more information about the Academy or who wish to request an application form should contact Ms. Lara Liotti at (845) 225-4300, extension 213. Applications for the upcoming session must be submitted no later than February 26, 2007.
