Putnam Valley High School Principal Takes Sabbatical Departs same day announcement is made by Margaret Sternberg
Putnam Valley High School Principal Raymond Cooper has taken a sabbatical from the school district in order to pursue his doctorate, according to Cooper who announced his decision to the staff during an early morning meeting on Monday, February 12, 2007. He was unable to be contacted at the high school by the PCN&R for a statement later that day because he had already left the premises.
Superintendent Gary Tutty said that that Cooper would be returning to Seton Hall University to pursue his doctorate and write his dissertation.
According to Tutty, there had been ongoing discussions between the administration and Cooper over the amount of time Cooper would need for research, although no conclusion had been reached during those talks. Cooper recently told the administration that a lot of preparation would be necessary for his doctorate and a sabbatical would be the best way of allowing him to do it.
Since the semester at Seton Hall has just begun, Tutty said, the district decided to grant the sabbatical effective this week. The sabbatical is expected to be open-ended in length, and Cooper will update his status periodically to the district.
The district has made High School Assistant Principal Sam Oliverio Acting Principal as they search for someone to hire as an interim Principal. That person will be paid on a per diem basis.
A written statement from Superintendent Tutty said, "Everyone wishes Mr. Cooper the best as he completes his doctorate." Phone messages left for School Board President Tina Mackay and Vice President Guy Cohen were not returned as this article went to press.
The School Board is expected to approve the sabbatical at its February 15 meeting.
