John Teagle Announces Candidacy for Trustee of Cold Spring Board
John Teagle announced his candidacy this week for one of two Village of Cold Spring Board of Trustees seats. Representing the Unity Party, Mr. Teagle states, "I have seen a positive change in local governing practices over the last year and hope to be a part of this earnest effort to bring the government to the people. The Community/Unity Party has been represented by Trustees Phil Heffernan, Karn Dunn and Seth Gallagher in recent elections and is largely responsible for introducing the new Comprehensive Plan process, the recent addition of a village newsletter, starting up a village website and looking into what parts of our code best represent the village in the 21st century.
"Besides local political interests, I have been closely associated with the Philipstown Recreation Department, regularly coaching Spring, Fall and Summer soccer, Winter basketball and helping out with technical assistance at the Depot Theater. My background in live sound engineering and recording has also been lent to a number of good causes, such as theatrical and musical productions for and by Haldane students, benefits for the Haldane Foundation, Tsunami survivors, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust, the Farmers Market, the Hoot on the Hudson/Little Stony Point Citizens Association and, for the last 6 years, the Common Threads Community Night festivities.
"My day job is taking care of the old Glenclyffe monastery which now houses the Garrison Institute, an interfaith retreat center, with a particular interest in making the 5-story building more energy efficient. Last year I accepted the position of Director for the Rec. Dept. soccer program, overseeing 26 coaches, 18 referees and 268 kids and their parents. I'm proud to have, over the last 7 years, been a part of making the program less of a competitive play-to-win league and more of a learning experience for the kids, accessible to beginners in all divisions, yet still fun and worthwhile for the more accomplished players. That is the essence of a community-funded program.
"I have three books published, as well as countless magazine articles on musical instruments and their history and have a knack for researching in-depth. In interviews, Cleveland Scene magazine referred to me as 'a walking encyclopedia of early rock and roll' and NY Newsday referred to me as 'a walking encyclopedia on vintage guitars.' My book Fender Amps, the First Fifty Years is in its 3rd printing and was recently chosen by 20th Century Guitar magazine as one of the thirty must-have books for the serious collector (out of close to a thousand books), saying 'Teagle researches like few others.' I will apply that attention to detail to my work for the village.
"Since moving here in 1999 with my wife Melanie (longtime PTA volunteer/board member) and daughter Cassidy (Haldane 7th grade), I have developed a fondness for the land and history, the community as a whole and the many interesting people I've had the pleasure of getting to know. There is no place quite like the Village of Cold Spring and I'm honored to be nominated for Trustee. I look forward to meeting those I haven't as I canvass door to door asking your opinions and visions for Cold Spring's future."
