Staff Sgt. in Iraq Teams up With Nine-year-old Putnam Valley Neighbor to Aid Child in France
Staff Sgt. Art Taylor adds caps collected by his neighbor, Thomas Fejes, to the bucket to be sent to Germany, where over six-hundred thousand have been sent toward the final goal of one million.
Staff Sgt. Arthur Taylor, a PutnamValley resident deployed to Iraq with the 411th Engineer Brigade of New Windsor, took it to heart when he heard of the effort to collect the caps from water and Gatorade bottles to earn a wheelchair for a child in France. Already, caps were coming in from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Germany, to help reach the goal of one million; and now they are coming from America.
Nine-year-old Thomas Fejes of Putman Valley read of Taylor's efforts to recover every possible cap from his troops in Balad, Iraq, in the PCNR and decided to go to work. Thomas got together with his classmates at Putnam Valley Elementary and collected 290 caps to contribute to the effort. Taylor received the caps along with a letter from Thomas (which follows) in late January.
"Dear Art,
I saw your picture in the P.V. newspaper. I saw you were counting caps, so I started collecting the caps with my class. We collected 290 caps!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you are proud of me. I started a basketball league. I played 4 games. I only lost one game by one point! Any way, the other team had the ball, so you know.
I really miss you!
Love, Thomas
The caps have been added to the cache to be sent to the German recycling center, which will purchase the wheelchair once the goal is reached.
