Annual Seedling Sale by Putnam Now Underway
The Putnam County Soil and Water Conservation District is pleased to announce the beginning of their Annual Seedling Sale. Landowners may choose from a variety of evergreens, deciduous trees, groundcovers, ferns, wildflower seeds and birdhouses. Participating in the Seedling Sale is a low cost way for citizens to help promote conservation, wildlife habitat and beautification within Putnam County.
The District is offering native evergreen species as transplants in the following varieties: Colorado Blue Spruce, White Spruce, and Eastern White Pine. Deciduous seedling varieties offered are: American Mountain Ash, American Sweet Crabapple, Arrowood Viburnum, Black Gum, Butterfly Bush, Forsythia, High Bush Blueberry, Lilac, Raspberry, Redbud, Red Osier Dogwood, Red Mulberry, River Birch, Rose of Sharon, Scarlet Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Sweet Shrub, White Flowering Dogwood and a Woodland Selection packet of American Plum, Nannyberry, Native Birch, Sassafras, and Witch Hazel.
Groundcovers provide an attractive, low maintenance alternative to a grassed area or flowerbeds. The varieties offered this year are Periwinkle, English Ivy, Pachysandra, Trumpet Vine, and Day Lilies. They are also offering five varieties of ferns: Christmas, Cinnamon, Maidenhair, New York and Ostrich ferns.
In addition to the trees and groundcovers, the District is also offering wood products in the form of: Bluebird boxes, Bat houses, Butterfly houses, Wood Duck Houses, and Wren houses.
Plant Putnam tree order forms and additional information may be obtained from the District Office, located at 841 Fair Street in the Transit Facility in Patterson, on the County website at www.putnameountyny.com
or by calling 878-7918, ext. 104. Orders will be accepted until March 21, 2007. Orders must be picked up at the 4-H Fair Grounds on Friday, April 20 or Saturday, April 21.
