Fire Destroys Garrison Home; Family Safe
Storm causes accidents, flying ice incident
By Maria Theodore Leiter

A fire claimed the home of Scott and Rita Crowder of 25 Woodland Drive in Garrison on Sunday reported Chief Rodney Tudor of the Garrison Volunteer Fire Department. Fortunately, the couple and their fouryear old child exited the home unharmed. Their college-aged son was away at school at the time.

"The fire companies did a great job," said Chris Fadden, Scott's Stepfather, with whom the family is now staying. "They got there quickly; unfortunately, the fire was too far gone." The cause of the fire was an accidental kitchen mishap, according to the Putnam County fire investigator. The GVFD was joined at the scene by the Cold Spring, North Highlands, Continental Village and Putnam Valley fire departments. The Peekskill Fire Department was on standby. According to Tudor, "The home sustained too much fire and water damage and is uninhabitable."

Other calls for the GVFD included three standby requests, assistance with an EMS call, and a carbon-monoxide detector alarm, which was tripped by an idling vehicle in a garage. The Garrison fire department was also manned around the clock last Wednesday in anticipation of last week's storm. Two firefighters slept in the station on Tuesday night, and a full crew stood by most of Wednesday. Luckily, there were no serious weather related incidents reported in Garrison during the storm.

However, the heavy ice laden snow did injure a person in Putnam Valley on Friday and the storm was the likely cause of two accidents that took place on the Taconic State Parkway last Tuesday evening. The accidents, both of which happened just south of the Route 301 exit, led to two people being transported to Hudson Valley Hospital Center. On Friday, a sheet of ice fell from the top of a notfully cleaned-off vehicle and struck and injured a pedestrian, according to Chief Louie Longo of the PVVFD. The patient was taken by PVVAC to the Hudson Valley Hospital Center. The PVVFD also responded to two calls at Peekskill Hollow Road on Monday, February 12. One call was for a small brush fire, the other was a call to assist the Putnam County Sheriff with a property damage automobile accident. They also were called to assist the Continental Village Fire Department with a possible structure fire on February 14.

The Cold Spring Fire Department was called to a chimney fire at 71 Morris Avenue in Cold Spring on Monday, February 12. They were assisted at the scene by the North Highlands Fire Department. The fire was contained to the chimney and there was no serious fire or water damage to the home. In addition, they responded to three activated alarms, two at the Carolyn Lahey Pavillion, and one at Foodtown. All were false alarms.

The North Highlands Fire Department reported that they were dispatched to 24 Lake Surprise Road on February 12 for a propane gas stove leak. The gas was turned off and the homeowner was instructed to call for service to repair one of the burners. An oil burner malfunction was the cause of a second call on the same day, this time to Nick and Angies Restaurant on Route 9. The boiler was turned off and the owners called for a service repair. On Friday, they were called to 13 Appaloosa Way for an automatic fire alarm. According to Chief Charles Nolen, the alarm was set off by a hair dryer.

The Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps. reported that they responded to twenty calls last week. Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corp. reported 12 calls for last week. Philipstown has two more EMTs, as Tom Merrigan and Nicole Miozzi received their certification this week.
