Putnam Valley's 4th Grade Trip to Madden Center Moves Forward School Board Approves High School Principal's Sabbatical By Margaret Sternberg
The February 15, 2007 meeting of the Putnam Valley Board of Education lasted a scant 40 minutes, with the Board moving quickly through 16 resolutions after having made several brief announcements. Superintendent Gary Tutty made a brief presentation on the 4th grade overnight trip to the Madden Outdoor Educational Center. Tutty said that he was "positive" toward the trip and that the board members had the information they needed to make a decision, referencing last year's trip and saying this year's would be the same. The board was also agreeable to the trip taking place, and Tutty said he would notify the teachers to go forward.
In other business, the trustees voted unanimously, and without comment, to approve the sabbatical of High School Principal Ray Cooper.
The budget schedule appeared to be finalized and includes one Saturday meeting, March 3, from 9:30am- 11:30am. That presentation will be the same as the one occurring at the March 1 regular meeting of the Board of Education and will include a discussion of programs and the spending plan in 2007-8. There will be a question period. Tutty mentioned that, in light of Mr. Cooper's departure, he and Assistant Superintendents Paul Lee and Barbara Fuchs would be addressing high school programs and needs. Tutty said he expected a rollover budget in the high school with the same programs as currently exist unless it was felt by teachers or program coordinators that there was a need for change.
Among the resolutions passed that evening, the board accepted the final vote tally of the Special District Meeting on the Excel Aid. The vote was 457 for and 47 against accepting the Aid, so the measure passed. The Excel Aid will be combined with the monies remaining from the building renovation project and Building Aid that will come to the district as a result of accepting the Excel Aid and will be used for additional classrooms for the Elementary School, an elevator for handicapped access and some additional renovations to the school.
The board authorized the use of unused sick leave credits to be used for credit time toward tenure, effective July 1, 2007.
The Assistant Superintendent for Budget and Finance was authorized to make any necessary budget transfers in order to balance accounts in preparation for an audit. The audit being done is the NYS Comptroller's Audit that is now mandated as a result of the Roslyn School District scandal from several years before. Two leave replacement teachers were approved for hire, and a school nurse was appointed to a six-month probationary period at the Putnam Valley Elementary School. A club advisor stipend and several spring coaches' stipends were approved.
The Board also approved the membership of the District in the Public Schools of Tomorrow, a national organization whose goal is to bring about "fundamental change in the schools and communities so that all children can learn to high standards, nurture their personal growth and talents, and develop the capacities needed for democratic citizenship, economic success and good parenting…" Among its goals are to "change fundamentally the manner in which schools are funded…, establish national standards for core academics, and provide additional support for low-performing schools."
The next meeting of the Putnam Valley Board of Education will be Thursday, March 1, at 7pm.
