Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services Issues Instructions re Expiring Potassium Iodide Tablets

The Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services announced today that the Potassium Iodide tablets, also known as KI, distributed in November, 2002 for a radiological emergency at Indian Point Energy Center are reaching the end of their shelf lives. All KI supplies from the 2002 distribution in Putnam County will expire at the end of March, 2007.

Putnam County, through the Bureau of Emergency Services is kicking-off a program to inform residents and people working within the Indian Point Emergency Planning Zone about the availability of fresh supplies of KI and how to properly dispose of the old tablets.

As coordinated with the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO), during the month of March 2007, the Bureau of Emergency Services will distribute new supplies of KI at a location in each of the EPZ Towns of Philpstown, Putnam Valley and Carmel. The distribution will occur during both day and evening hours. The schedule of locations and dates will be announced after receipt of the KI.

New KI supplies will also be available to be picked up, after this announcement at the Bureau of Emergency Services offices located at 112 Old Route Six, Carmel. Office hours are 9am-4pm, Monday through Friday, or by calling (845) 808- 4000.

The doses (tablets) of KI are provided by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) through the New York SEMO. KI is now available in two dosage (tablet) sizes (130-mg and 65-mg) as well as in a liquid form.

SEMO will be coordinating two informational sessions on April 26, 2007 for school administrators, directors and managers of day-care facilities and nursery schools. Participating in the informational sessions will be representatives of the New York State Departments of Education and Health, the Office of Child and Family Services and the county Bureau of Emergency Services. The locations and times will be announced, by The State Emergency Management Office, directly to those providers.
