Verda E. Knisley
Verda E. Knisley passed on February 17, 2007. She was 98 years old. Verda was born in Herman, IL on June 4, 1908 and resided in Galesburg, IL. She married George Knisley on December 22, 1924 in Decatur, IL where she lived until 1951. While in Decatur, she managed the camera department at Haines & Essex, she went on a buying trip to Chicago and she was a member of the Decatur Camera Club. During WWII, Verda worked at a defense plant testing fuses for armor-piercing shells.
In 1951, a publishing company brought her to NYC to work as an Editor. She also worked as a Real Estate broker. In 1967, she moved to Putnam Valley. She retired from Reader's Digest. Verda spent her retirement years volunteering for the Tompkins Corners United Methodist Church as Treasurer and working on all committees, fundraising and applying for grants. She was most proud of her work to get the church listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
She is survived by her daughter, Gwendolyn Cope of Putnam Valley and her niece, Shirley Stout of Oreana, IL. Arrangements were made through the Heritage Funeral Home, Putnam Valley. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 21 at 10am at the Tompkins Corners United Methodist Church in Putnam Valley and interment will follow at Tompkins Corners Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations to the Tompkins Corners United Methodist Church, PO Box 292, Putnam Valley, NY 10579.
