2007 Saunders History Contest Now Underway

The Putnam County Historical Society and Foundry School Museum is pleased to announce the annual Saunders History Contest for local seventh grade students attending the Haldane and Garrison Schools. Students have been invited to submit original research projects focusing on an aspect of the history of Cold Spring, Garrison, Putnam County, or the Mid- Hudson Valley. Last year 67 students participated for the $100 first place prize.

In addition to cash prizes, Scenic Hudson is offering the Young Explorer's Award, granted to the student whose project best embodies their 44- year mission to protect and preserve the region's natural beauty and quality of life.

The contest aims to increase student awareness of the rich history of our region, and to foster a lifelong love of history and research. To these ends we encourage students to conduct research at area libraries, and local historic sites. Projects are due by 5pm, Friday, March 30 and should be delivered to the Putnam County Historical Society and Foundry School Museum. Awards will be announced during a reception for participants and their families, at 7:00 pm, Thursday, April 26 at the museum. PCHS has sponsored the Saunders History Contest for over 20 years. The contest is named in honor of Jean Saunders - teacher, historian, and first curator of the Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum. For more information, please call the Museum at 265- 4010.
