Local Poet Jo Pitkin Wins Prize in Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley Contest
Jo Pitkin of Cold Spring won Third Prize in Mohonk Mountain Stage Company's 2007 poetry contest, Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley. Final judge was the distinguished poet Eamon Grennan, Dexter M. Ferry Jr. Professor of English at Vassar College.
Pitkin's poem, The Mollusk, will be published in the forthcoming issue of Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley, Volume 2. It will also be given a public reading by MMSC's Readers Theatre Group on May 4 at Unison Arts Center in New Paltz.
The contest was open to all writers living in the Hudson Valley of New York, from Albany to the metro-New York City area. Over 250 poems were submitted. In addition to three winners, four honorable mentions and eight finalists were selected. MMSC is an independent theater company that is dedicated to performing the written word. Its regional poetry competition is one aspect of this important mission. More information is available at the MMSC website, mmstageco.com.
First prize was awarded to Christine Turczyn of Rhinebeck and Ken Holland of Fishkill took second. "All of these poets surely celebrate, and animate, the written word." says Mr. Grennan, "Congratulations to all the winners, and to Mohonk Mountain Stage Company for their encouragement of Hudson Valley voices."
