Nelsonville Candidates to Run Unopposed Board rejects lowest bid for street cleaning, signs by Maria Theodore Leiter
With the deadline for submission by candidates behind it, the Village of Nelsonville goes into the March 20, 2007 elections with only one announced candidate for Mayor, and one name submitted for the one trustee position to be voted on this year.
William Merando, who served as Mayor from 1999 through 2003, announced his candidacy to replace Mayor Mitchell Dul, who said he would not seek re-election. Trustee Anthony Merante announced that he would run for reelection to the Board. Both candidates will run unopposed. However, as Merando, who once became Mayor as the result of a write-in campaign knows, the results will not be certain until Election Day.
Elections will be held from Noon to 9pm in the Village office. Registration will take place on Saturday, March 10 from Noon to 5pm. There are currently 367 registered voters in Nelsonville.
At their February 12 monthly meeting, the Village of Nelsonville Board threw their support behind a no-smoking initiative being promoted by the Putnam County Youth Bureau by approving a non-binding resolution. The resolution supports a nationwide effort to have young people educate their peers about the tobacco industry's use of Hollywood and the media to promote cigarette smoke. The goal of the campaign is to try to pressure Hollywood to eliminate smoking in films made for young audiences.
The Board denied a street maintenance contract to the lowest bidder, Consolidated Industrial Services of Medina, NY, and instead awarded the work of maintaining and clearing village streets to the only other bidder, George Weise of Cold Spring Landscaping. The fear was that the low-bidder's twenty-four mile distance would pose a problem. Weise has the current contract. There was a 10% difference between the two bids, which amounts to $1,331 over three years.
"The Board felt that in case of an emergency, they could not get to the Village in a timely manner," explained Village Clerk Pauline Minners.
The Board accepted the resignation of Marlene Bowman from the Planning Board, effective March 1.
"Marlene has done tremendous work and I want you to know that I appreciate it," said Dul. "I know that the rest of the Board appreciates it. There are people who are willing to step up and you have done it consistently."
The upcoming renewal of the contract with Cold Spring Fire Department was discussed. The next meeting of the Village Board will be on March 12 at 7:30pm.
