NY State - First In The Nation Dear Editor:
New York State is often criticized for being "last in the nation". We are now first.
Our State Board of Elections is the first board to properly evaluate the voting systems that were submitted for state certification. And NY State discovered that the machines submitted do not work. The State Board was the first to properly oversee the work of the ""Independent Testing Authority" and they discovered the lab wasn't independent at all. In fact this lab may not have done any independent testing - ever. In any state. And it certified about 70% of all the voting equipment in the country,
The testing of the new voting equipment has now stopped in N.Y, State as a result of these findings, The State Association of Country Elected Officials passed a resolution urging the State not to implement new voting equipment until 2009 to avoid chaos in the 2008 high turn-out presidential election.
A lesson to be learned by all of this - government doesn't work well when it operates in secret The manufacture, certification, sale and use of these electronic voting machines were and are all based on secrets. Secret software, secret certification processes and unobservable invisible ballots that the voters and observers cannot witness properly.
So bravo to us - the voters - who have been working on this very important issue, Our State Board would not have been so careful with certification testing and oversight of this lab but for all our hard work and these scandals might never have come to light.
