Mary Mesisco

Mary Mesisco, of Jefferson Village, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on February 18. She was 90. The beloved matriarch of her family, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She touched the lives of many people and was always there to listen, lend a helping hand and made everyone feel welcome at her dining room table. She was a talented cook and her table was the focal point of many joyous occasions.

She had a tender comforting warmth that allowed her to generously share her wisdom in a kind and gentle way. She also bestowed her good judgment in a practical, down to earth manner. Two of her most memorable sayings are: "What is for you will never pass you by;" and "What doesn't happen in a year can happen in a day."

Born on October 14, 1916 in Yonkers, she was the daughter of Sebastian and Maria Scialdone. In January 1937 she married Ralph Mesisco at Our Lady of Grace in the Bronx. She was a retired switchboard operator for Wanamaker's Department Store at the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Ann Marie (Tom) Gorman, of Yorktown Heights; and a son, Angelo (Mary Jo), of Norfolk, Va. Other survivors are six grandchildren, Mary Pat (Kevin) Gorman-Barry, of Cold Spring, Nadine Gorman, of Yorktown Heights, Thomas (Karen) Gorman, of Dublin, Ohio; Patricia Mesisco, of Norfolk, Va.; Ralph (Brooke) Mesisco, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and Nicole (Billy) Reed, of Birmingham, Ala. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren Liam, Kevin and Maria Barry, of Cold Spring; Blaize and Chase Gorman, of Dublin, Ohio; Mary and Emily Mesisco, of Virginia Beach; and Sarah and John Lloyd Reed of Birmingham, Ala., all of whom affectionately called her "GeGe". Her devoted husband, Ralph, predeceased her in 1994. She was also predeceased by five brothers, Anthony, Alex, Jerry, Gene and John Scialdone, and two sisters, Jennie DeFilippo and Tessie Zarro.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Care of Westchester and Putnam, 540 White Plains Rd., Tarrytown, N.Y. 10591. A mass was held last week and internment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
