Florence E. Stevenson
Florence Edna Stevenson, 88, of Bedford, NH, the wife of the late Kenneth G. Stevenson, died on Monday February 26, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Florence was born in Newark, NJ on October 11th, 1918, daughter of the late Arthur Court and Louise Mary (VonWaldersdorf) Court. Florence grew up in Brooklyn, NY, where she graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic High School with high honors.
In 1949 Florence moved to Cold Spring with her husband, taking up residence at 9 Morris Avenue. During more than a twenty-five year residence within the village she participated in many volunteer activities, supporting local church and civic organizations.
Florence worked at several Cold Spring businesses including the Butterfield Hospital where she was both the receptionist and the telephone operator. Her capable multi-tasking abilities were the result of skills she previously acquired as an employee of the Bell Telephone Co. in NYC. At Bell she started in a position that required delivery of routing messages to switchboard operators while on roller-skates. By the time she left Bell, about 10 years later, she had risen through their ranks all the way to shift supervisor.
Florence was candid, and always placed her family and friends first. She will be greatly missed by all who met her.
Florence was pre-deceased by her husband Kenneth and her two sisters; Louise and Frances. Florence is survived by her two children; Kenneth G. Stevenson Jr. and Jane L. Lucas, five grandchildren; Ruth Marie Swisher, Kyle Lucas, Andrew Lucas, Kenneth G. Stevenson III, and Jonathan Lucas, several nieces and nephews, and seven great-grandchildren; Evan, Logan, Adain James, LeAnna, Elizabeth and Justin.
