Putnam Valley Man Dies in Fire NHFD called to Thalle fire by Maria Theodore Leiter
James Roche, a 79-year-old man, and his dog perished on February 19, 2007 when a fire consumed his home on Harrimac Road in Putnam Valley.
According to Putnam Valley 2nd Assistant Chief Louie Longo, the man's wife, Elizabeth, escaped the blaze with only minor burns. The investigation into the fire revealed that the fire was probably caused by an improperly extinguished cigarette.
The Putnam Valley Fire Department responded to another structure fire on February 23. That was a garage fire caused by an electrical cord that was shorted out by a piece of falling metal. The fire was put out and no injuries were involved. On February 26, they were called to a chimney fire on Horton Hollow Road and responded to a vehicle fire on February 27.
The following day, the PVFD dealt with a personal injury accident on Peekskill Hollow Road. The vehicle ran into a guard rail and the driver was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital Center. PVFD firefighters also responded to two accidents that did not involve injuries, one on Mill St. on March 1 and one on Oscawana Lake Road on March 2. They also rescued a dog that was trapped under a deck on Arbutus Road.
The Department reported that on March 3 they responded to a rollover accident on Route 301. The driver of the vehicle refused medical attention. In addition, over the past two weeks, they responded to two false alarms and one medical assist.
The Garrison Volunteer Fire Department received three calls last week, reported Chief Rodney Tudor. Two were for downed wires and one was to standby for the PVFD as they battled the fire on Harrimac Road.
Deputy Chief John Noschese reported that the North Highlands Fire Department was called out on five occasions last week.
On February 25, they responded to an automatic fire alarm at 260 East Mountain Road South. The alarm was set off by smoke from a fireplace when the resident forgot to open the damper.
On March 1, they were dispatched by Mutual Aid to the Rombout Fire District at Thalle Industries in Fishkill. Rombout requested the NHFD's tanker to help put out an acetylene tank fire.
"Apparently a worker using an oxygen/acetylene torch found that the acetylene tank had caught fire," said Noschese. It took half the tanker's capacity to extinguish the blaze.
The NHFD was called to the scene of an accident on Route 9, just North of 301 on March 3. The driver reportedly fell asleep and drove off the road. The two occupants of the vehicle were checked out by Philipstown Ambulance personnel, but were not taken to the hospital. The following day, the department was called to deal with a vehicle on Route 9, just North of Fishkill Road that was leaking gasoline from a ruptured fuel tank. The female driver apparently drifted onto the North bound shoulder and drove the car onto the guard rail, rupturing the tank. The driver was not injured. The vehicle was towed off the road, while the fire department stood by to make sure the gasoline did not catch fire in the process.
The Putnam Valley Volunteer Ambulance Corps reported that it had a total of 10 calls last week.
