Keep Putnam Beautiful Commissions Artists to Paint Trash Cans to Reduce Litter
Keep Putnam Beautiful (KPB) is recruiting and commissioning artists to paint trash cans (steel barrels measuring 3 ft high and 2 ft in diameter) to be installed at public places in Putnam County. KPB will deliver blank cans & caps and retrieve finished projects; artists are responsible for paint, design, etc. Participation is open to all and year around, although the focus is springtime. KPB will get (10) or more blank 55-gallon drums & caps and award $150 honoraria to the selected artists.
To qualify, submit a sketch or photo of your design and any other supporting materials to KPB, 40 Gleneida Ave., Carmel, NY 10512, by April 1. "Kids art" sometimes is too messy for display, so the involvement of an art teacher or supervisor is crucial to the success of kids' cans.
There is no design theme. Abstract art, reproductions of classic art, cartoons and even poetry can adorn the cans. Cans may feature Keep Putnam Beautiful or other environmental messages. Big, bright and clear designs look good from a distance. They reserve the right to "retire" any cans they deem too messy or otherwise inappropriate for this program. For more information relating to what paint and coating to use, contact the KPB.
An exhibit of cans will be on Saturday, May 19 from 10am - noon in the parking lot of the Putnam County Donald B. Smith County Government Campus, 110 Old Route 6, Carmel, NY 10512…at the Recycling Center behind building #3. All guests get to vote on their favorite can, which wins a $100 cash prize.
During the week following the exhibit and contest the cans will be distributed to selected public locations in Putnam County. A large plastic bag or plastic trashcan will be placed inside the 55-gallon drums. This will make it easier to empty. Complete your can by early May if you want it in the. Otherwise, they will deliver, pickup and install cans year around.
