An Open Letter to our Community from the Haldane BOE
To the Editor:

It's that time of year again when the Haldane Board of Education must prepare a school budget for the 2007-8 year. This year's budget and school trustee vote is May 15th. We recognize at the start of this process how important it will be for us, as a Board, to try our best to balance the needs of the Haldane students, the staff and the taxpayers of this community. We understand the importance, impact and degree of responsibility the Haldane School has in our community and that is why we're asking for your help.

Our first two budget workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, March 7th and Tuesday, March 20th both at 7pm. in the Mabel Merritt Building on campus. In addition we're planning to host a "Community Budget Forum" at St. Mary's Church (meeting room) on March 27th in the evening (exact time to be determined). At these meetings you will have a chance to learn how the budget is developed and listen firsthand to the difficult choices and obstacles we are faced with as a school district. You will have the opportunity to voice your opinions and concerns.

For those who cannot attend in person we will be posting all documents on our revamped school web site

www.haldaneschool.org

and ALL Board of Education meetings are "podcast", an audio reproduction of the meeting that can be downloaded through iTunes for free! We believe fully in transparency of government and your participation is necessary for us to do our jobs effectively.

The hard work and tough decision making processes that we face during this time of year are not easy and certainly do not make the Board's "List of Favorites" in terms of tasks we are obligated to carry out. It is a crucial time, though, and we are dedicated to rolling up our sleeves and doing our best with your help to move this community forward in a responsible and respectful manner. Please join us!

Dave Merandy President, The Haldane
