Mayor Philips is "Still the One"
Dear Editor,

Forgive me for borrowing the title of Congressman John Hall's big hit "Still The One" from an earlier time when he was young and famous with the rock band Orleans, and applying it to our esteemed Mayor Anthony Philips for this upcoming election. However, it is with good reason, as I believe the Mayor and our new Congressman are both the right people for the times we live in.

Having never been a member of any political party, I try to take the best parts of conservative and liberal thinking to create my "middle of the road". Perhaps a good number of readers of this newspaper do the same. I didn't think Sue Kelly was so bad, just that John Hall is the better person to represent us in Congress. Similarly, I think Phil Heffernan is a decent man with good intentions and he clearly loves Cold Spring. In fact, I like Phil quite a bit. I just think Anthony Philips has done an outstanding job over the years and deserves to be retained as our Mayor.

I ask Cold Spring residents who lean towards the Democratic Party to resist the temptation of equating Washington D.C. issues with those of Cold Spring. Issues such as Iraq, 40+ million without health insurance, tax cuts for the wealthy, and anything else that made you vote for John Hall should not make you think our gruff, but good-hearted Mayor should be put to pasture. I'm sure Mayor Philips has his own opinions on what goes on in the capital but it's Cold Spring we're talking about, and frankly, I don't care if the Mayor is a Whig, a communist, or a nudist.

More to the point, I would argue that Mayor Philips continues to have the right stuff to lead our small village and he would be sorely missed if he spent all of his free time loving his grandchildren and not worrying about all of us. He has been living in Cold Spring his entire life and he knows better than we newcomers what makes the place tick. His knowledge of our infrastructure - all the things we assume will be working when we wake up every morning - is second to none. His background in construction management means we won't get conned by contractors hired to do work in the village. He is well aware of the cost of running our village and doesn't want to see any residents taxed out to Dutchess County.

In short, Mayor Philips is solid, dependable, and honest. We should be glad he wishes to continue to be of service to Cold Spring. I know we'll miss him when he's gone, so let's keep him while we can.
