Bring Back the Great Democratic Tradition of Candidates' Debate Dear Editor:
In the weeks preceding the 1993 mayoral election I attended a candidate's debate at the Cold Spring Fire House. Moderated by the late, great Katie O'Donnell, then President of the Chamber of Commerce, it was a lively, spirited and informative evening. Each candidate had ample time to state their platform, discuss their differences and field questions from the audience. I left armed with newfound knowledge that enabled me to make an educated choice on Election Day.
Fourteen years have passed since Cold Spring has experienced such a forum. This year we have a range of particularly strong candidates running for Mayor and Trustee. I implore the candidates to schedule two public debates, Mayor Night and Trustee Night. A moderator can be agreed upon. If there is no one locally, the County Board of Elections or the League of Women Voters would be glad to help.
Let's bring this great democratic tradition back to Cold Spring. I'll be there and listening to every word.
