Making Math Relevant: A Workshop for Teachers
How many times have you heard students complain that they will never again use the math skills they are being taught?
At the Center for Environmental Education at Putnam/ Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services, teachers of grades 6 through 10 can learn how to make math relevant to their students by using real-world global problems.
Participants will design makeovers of their existing math curricula that incorporate topics such as population, resource consumption, and wealth distribution. Sample problems will be presented, discussed and solved, and participants will leave the workshop with a unit, lesson or module for use in their classrooms.
The course will be taught by Scott Beall, an enrichment teacher in Brewster Central Schools and adjunct professor at the College of New Rochelle. It will take place July 5th and 6th from 8 am to 6pm at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES Yorktown campus.
Participants are eligible to receive one graduate credit through the College of New Rochelle and one in-service credit if approved by their local district. Registration must be received by June 21, along with a $125 fee for in-service credit. Those who wish to receive graduate credit must also pay $260 to the College of New Rochelle in addition to the $125 fee to BOCES.
