Grace Knowlton to Give Gallery Talk at Garrison Arts Center
Garrison Art Center is pleased to host a gallery talk by Grace Knowlton who currently has an exhibition of giclee prints of photographs, Bones, in the Anita Hart Balter Gallery. The talk will be on Sunday, March 18 at 3pm. She will have a slide show which documents her career and a dialogue with the audience. Reservations are not required, but let the office know if you will be attending. Light refreshments will be served.
Knowlton began her career as a painter in the 1960s. After her move to New York, she set up a studio in a coal bin and began making increasingly three-dimensional paintings. They evolved into spheres that range in size from medium to gigantic. The spheres began to unravel and soon they were shards and she was back to twodimensional painting. Since then, she has traveled freely through various art forms, methods and materials. Knowlton is an avid collector of eclectic things that always find a way into her art. She has been digitally photographing her bones that she acquires and has an equally eclectic body of giclee prints of them. She works closely with Lisa Dieboll at Highlands Studio in Beacon to achieve the print quality she wants.
On the surface of some of the prints she goes in with paint, pastel or watercolor to change the landscape. This method of working brings her back to her love of drawing. The photographs with or without surface painting, are executed in Knowlton's signature gestural and abstract style. She does not specify the orientation of the photographs as they are installed. She is confident in leaving that decision to gallery personnel. She feels certain that any orientation will work. That confidence is justified. Knowlton is in the collection of many major museums and instutitions, as well as by many individual collectors. She exhibits internationally, nationally and locally.
The galleries are open seven days a week, noon to 5pm. For further information contact: Garrison Art Center, 23 Garrison's Landing, Garrison, New York, 424-3960 and visit
