Putnam County Historical Society Exhibition Celebrates Donald MacDonald, a Living Legend Opens on March 24, 2007
Philipstown Historian Donald H. MacDonald is celebrated with a new exhibition that illustrates his writings with more than 100 historical images. A Ramble through the Hudson Highlands: A History in Pictures and the Writings of Donald H. MacDonald features photographs, prints, postcards, and maps from the collection of the Putnam County Historical Society & Foundry School Museum. The exhibition will be on view March 24 through June 17, 2007, at 63 Chestnut Street, Cold Spring. Hours are 11 to 5, Wednesday through Sunday.
Since the mid-1980s, MacDonald, 82, has been the official historian of the Village of Cold Spring and the Town of Philipstown. His duties include responding to inquiries about the history of this region. He has written a monthly local history column for the Putnam County News and Recorder since 1988. Excerpts from 51 of these articles are featured in the exhibition, and come alive with historical images, many of which have never been published.
"I have tried to direct these articles to the younger people of the area, to enlighten them about local history," says MacDonald. A kindly and modest man, he described his efforts as an attempt "to give something back to the community that has been good" to him and his late wife. MacDonald was born in Peekskill in 1925 and has spent most of his life in our area. He married in 1964 and took an apartment in Cold Spring with his new wife, Mary Ann (1925- 2006). He continues to live in the same apartment, which occupies the second floor of a small house dating from about 1864 on Main Street near the village hall.
A 56-page exhibition catalogue accompanies the exhibition and is a must-have resource for a broader and deeper understanding of local history. This publication features excerpts of MacDonald's writings, more than 100 images from the museum collection, most of which have never been published, and an appendix listing all of MacDonald's articles written for the PCN&R. Trudie A. Grace, the curator of the PCHS- FSM, is the editor of the catalogue and has written an introduction for it. The catalogue is available in the museum store. Members are invited to an opening reception on March 23. Please call the museum for details, 265-4010.
