Philipstown Garden Club Offers Summer Internships with Local Organizations
The Philipstown Garden Club in partnership with local organizations will once again sponsor area students for summer intern positions. The internship program has been running for ten years with over 40 interns completing the program. Applications will be available in the local libraries and schools. Interns are required to work July and August, 20 hours per week for which a stipend will be paid. Juniors, entering seniors and graduating seniors may apply. Philipstown Garden Club member, JoAnn Brown and her committee will give consideration to the first twenty-five applicants. The local organizations involved are Manitoga, Boscobel, Constitution Marsh, Glynwood Center and Stonecrop.
At Manitoga the intern would participate in the operation of the facility. There will be opportunities to help with the restoration of trails and gardens, tours of the house and garden and office work. The opportunity also exists to greet people at the visitor's guide building on special weekends.
Stonecrop will provide the intern with a stimulating learning experience in practical horticulture including ornamental horticulture, propagation of alpine, woodland and flower garden plants, greenhouse management, soil preparation and compost production. All student interns are required to keep a notebook recording dayto day activities as well as taking notes on assigned tasks.
The Boscobel intern will participate in the maintenance of the grounds and gardens. This person must have an interest in horticulture and be comfortable speaking with the general public who visit Boscobel's grounds each summer.
The interns at Glynwood center help maintain a large vegetable garden, a flower cutting garden and the formal gardens around the main house.
At the Constitution Marsh Sanctuary intern duties will include assisting the staff in manning the Center, particularly on the weekends. They also help in caring for the animal exhibits and working with the staff and national Audubon interns.
Year after year glowing reports have been received by the Philipstown Garden Club Internship Committee from the sponsoring organizations and from the interns themselves.
Watch for flyers and application, which will be distributed soon.
