March Nature Programs at Stony Kill
March over to Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center this month for exciting opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
On Saturday, March 10 at 2pm come sit with the birds and enjoy a moment of real surprise, for you and for them at "Close Encounters of the Bird Kind." We*ll learn about bird behavior as we take turns in the role of Friendly Scarecrow to see just how close birds will come to us.
On Saturday, March 17 at 2pm learn about the natural history of newts, frogs, and salamanders at "Leaping (and Crawling) Leprechauns!" Learn about the emergence of spring amphibians and their incredible life cycles. After, there will be a leisurely walk on the trails to search for some animals in the wild.
Join the Stony Kill staff at Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill for the Sugar Maple Celebration on Saturday, March 24. An outdoor experience for the whole family. Learn how to identify and tap sugar maple trees. On-going demonstrations of sugarmaking from 10am to 5pm in the Sharpe sugar shack. Call Sharpe Reservation at 845- 897-4320 or visit

Also on Saturday, March 24 at 2pm Stony Kill staff will be leading a walk on one of their favorite trails in search of signs of spring. Meet at the Manor House at Stony Kill.
Attack of the Invasives! Stony Kill will host this program on Saturday, March 31 at 2pm. Did you know that over a fourth of New York's plant species came from another country or continent, often displacing native species? Find out how this has happened, what problems it causes, and what we can do about it, while learning some basic plant ID and forest management techniques.
Stony Kill Farm Environmental Education Center is operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and is located on Route 9D in Wappingers Falls, two miles north of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. The grounds offer seven miles of trails and are open to the public from sunrise to sunset for hiking and enjoying nature.
