Sandy Galef Reminds 9/11 Workers and Volunteers of Deadline for Workers' Compensation Benefits
9/11 responders who helped in the rescue, recovery, or cleanup of the World Trade Center ruins have until August 14, 2007 to register to preserve their rights to file a workers' compensation claim in case of future illness.
After 9/11, 2001, the New York State Legislature enacted a law allowing workers and volunteers up to August 14, 2007 to register to file a workers' compensation claim if they become sick in the future. Only 5,000 have registered, while tens of thousands are estimated to be eligible.
New York State Assemblywoman Sandy Galef urges all those who helped at the scene in the days and months afterwards to be sure and register before the August 14 deadline. Galef explains: "So many people from Westchester and Putnam Counties were so selfless. Five years later we are seeing health problems related to toxic dust or psychological trauma. People need to protect their right to a claim in case of future problems. It is important to both themselves and their families."
