Ray of Light Needed to Trample Ignorance Dear Editor:
The Thomas Jefferson Building of The Library of Congress includes the following quotations inscripted on the walls of this historical Washington building established in 1800.
"Give instruction to those who cannot procure it for themselves" Confucius "Litera Scripta Manet" (The written word endures) in the Librarian's room and in the Members of Congress reading Room: "The Spirit of Truth tramples the Dragon of Ignorance and Falsehood and reaches to heaven for a ray of light..."
We now reach for that ray of light to trample falsehood, to trample ignorance, to do so by preserving one of our villages most meaningful, if not the most valued, commodities, our library. Without it, (and surely a curtailment signifies the beginning of the end), the education and enlightenment of our residents, our children, neighbors, and visitors will be irreparably diminished. Those who do not agree have obviously not spent enough time in libraries.
