BOCES Course Uses Agriculture to Motivate Student Learning
Every elementary school teacher knows that one of the best ways to capture the attention of young students is to let them get their hands dirty- literally.
At the Center for Environmental Education at Putnam/ Northern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), teachers of grades K through 6 can learn how to meet New York State Learning standards by introducing students to the many aspects of food in their lives.
Starting from the ground up with an exploration of soil, the course will trace food from seed to table, incorporating topics such as integrated pest management, animal and bird science, and outdoor activities. Participants will spend time at the Hilltop Hanover Environmental Education Center in Yorktown, Sprout Creek Farm in southern Dutchess County, Madden Center for Environmental Education in Kent Cliff, and Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Tarrytown.
Taught by Perry Dewey, Director of Agriculture Outreach and Education at Cornell University, and Vince Lalli, an agriculture literacy specialist, the course will run July 30 through August 1. Registration and an in-service fee of $125 is required by July 23. For more information, call (914) 248- 2339.
