12-Year-Old Cold Spring Girl Struck by Car While Crossing Route 9
At about 8:20am on March 15, 2007, a 12-year-old Philipstown girl was injured after being struck by two vehicles as she crossed Route 9 in Philipstown.
The Putnam County Sheriff's Department reports that Deputy Sheriff Christopher Pollard was on patrol along Route 9 in Philipstown when he observed two vehicles stopped in the roadway after they each struck a pedestrian. Deputy Pollard initiated an investigation, which revealed Jessica Mendola, 12, of Philipstown, missed her school bus as it traveled northbound on Route 9. In order to catch the bus when it turned around and traveled southbound on Route 9, Miss Mendola crossed Route 9 from the northbound lane to the southbound lane while speaking with her mother on a cellular telephone. As Miss Mendola reached the southbound lane, she was struck by a 2002 Ford Mustang, operated by Kathleen Biddle, 23, of Philipstown. The impact threw Miss Mendola into the northbound lane where she was run over by a 2001 Volvo station wagon operated by Cheryl Chirico, 35, also of Philipstown.
Both Ms. Biddle and Ms. Chirico, along with several passing motorists, immediately stopped in order to pick up and, move Ms. Chirico's vehicle, after Miss Mendola became stuck underneath the vehicle's front tires. Emergency personnel from the Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corp, Garrison Volunteer Ambulance Corp, and the North Highlands Fire Department responded to the scene in order to treat Miss Mendola. She was subsequently transferred by Philipstown Ambulance to Westchester Medical Center for treatment of her injuries - a broken right leg and a bruised lung. Although neither Ms. Biddle nor Ms. Chirico was physically injured as a result of the collisions, Garrison Ambulance Corp did transport Ms. Biddle to Hudson Valley Hospital to be treated for shock.
In addition to Deputy Pollard, Investigators Vincent Martin and Robert Langley, Sergeants Lee Stabe and Michael Szabo, and Deputy Sheriffs Michael Ball, Johnathan Bradley, and Brian Aisenstat responded to the scene.
No charges were filed in connection with this incident and Miss Mendola's injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
