Motorists Cited for Driving with Suspended Licenses, Registrations
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the recent arrests of two motorists over the span of three days for driving with suspensions against their licenses or vehicle registrations.
At about 10:43am on March 12, 2007, Deputy Sheriff Brian Aisenstat arrested Lisa Newman, 38, of Cortlandt Manor, for Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended Registration, a misdemeanor. While patrolling along Sprout Brook Road in Philipstown, Deputy Aisenstat initiated a traffic stop of Ms. Newman's vehicle after learning the registration was suspended for lack of insurance. The deputy cited Ms. Newman for the suspended registration charge as well as driving without insurance, a violation. Ms. Newman was released on her own recognizance pending an April 18th appearance in the Town of Philipstown Justice Court.
At about 5:58pm on March 14, 2007, Sergeant Paul Boscia stopped a car on Fishkill Road in Philipstown for crossing over the double yellow line. Sergeant Boscia checked the license of the driver, Michael Tompkins, 21, of Newburgh, and discovered that his driving privileges were suspended for a lapse in insurance. The sergeant arrested Mr. Tompkins for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the Third Degree, a misdemeanor, and issued him a traffic summons for crossing the yellow line. Mr. Tompkins was released on his own recognizance pending a future appearance in the Town of Philipstown Justice Court.
The suspended license and registration charges are misdemeanors, carrying penalties of up to thirty days in jail and fines of up to $500. The insurance violation is punishable by a $100 fine, while the traffic, infraction is punishable by a court-determined fine.
