| Building Bridges Building Boats is again holding its Summer River Workshop for students from grade 6 and up. There are three one-week sessions beginning July 9. Students will learn boat handling and boat safety while gaining an intimate knowledge of the Hudson River. At least half the day is spent in BBBB boats under the supervision of experienced personnel. Part of each day is devoted to activities including seamanship studies, log keeping, beachcombing and exploration. The emphasis is on fun and safety.
Week I and Week II are open to all. Week III is the serial trip program, during which students will travel along the river, leaving from and traveling to a different destination each day. Students for this course must have successfully completed at least one week of River training, although two weeks is recommended. The program will run from 9am to 3pm each day. Session I runs from July 9-13, session II from July 16-July 20 and the serial trip program runs from July 23-July 27. For enrollment contact Diana Stenzel at (845) 265 5220 or dstenzel@optonline.net.
The Summer River Workshop serves as training for other BBBB events throughout the year, which include races, trips, and festivals. For the third year in a row students from the workshop will join the Great Hudson River Paddle. There will be two BBBB boats with the paddle, one traveling from Albany to Cold Spring and one which will join the paddle at Saugerties. Each year, in December, BBBB rowers participate in the American Star Race in New York City along with other students from similar programs throughout the Northeast. In addition, BBBB students attend Hudson River related festival that support groups like Riverkeeper, Clearwater, and the Hudson River Museum.
