Elected Officials Must Uphold The Provisions Of the Library Referendum Dear Editor:
I have an 18-year-old daughter who recently registered to vote. How do I explain to her that something like this can happen after she votes in good faith: That a publicly elected official can overturn the results of an uncontested election, even though the Board of Elections upheld it? What kind of lesson is that for a young member of this community who is eager to vote for the first time?
The election was well publicized. Coverage was not limited to the village of Cold Spring. In fact, I remember coverage by The Journal News prior to the election. Lawn signs peppered Philipstown - where I reside - not just the villages. Coverage in The Putnam County News, both pro and con, was widespread.
Voters, as well as elected officials, often don't agree with the results of an election - that is how democracy works. Now is the time for our elected officials to stand up and uphold the wishes of their voters. Hopefully, we will all be able to reassure our teenagers that our elected officials decided to take the ethically and legally correct action: to uphold the provisions of this referendum and support this vital community resource.
