David Masten Reilly, Sr.
David Masten Reilly, Sr. passed away on March 16, 2007, at Friendship Village Life Care Facility in Tempe, Arizona with his loving companion Florence Donaghey by his side. He was 92 years old.
Born on November 16, 1914, he was the son of Zeta Masten Reilly and Harry Reilly of Pleasant Valley. He has spent the past 20 years in Arizona.
He attended Poughkeepsie schools and was a graduate of Amenia High School.
On June 11, 1938 he married Buryl Libby, in Pawling in St. John's Church, who predeceased him in 1998, 6 months before their 60th wedding anniversary.
He was a linotype operator at the Pawling Press, which he owned, and later worked for the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Putnam County News and Recorder. He was a self-employed printer in Cold Spring for many years, completing work for Our Lady of Loretto Church, Malcolm Gordon School, St. Basil's Academy, and many other groups in the Hudson Valley area. He was a member of Our Lady of Loretto parish for many years, where he completed the weekly parish bulletin and served as an usher at weekly Mass.
He was a trustee on the Cold Spring Village Board, during which time he was very proud to have been part of Cold Spring becoming established as an architectural and historic district. He was also a member of the Civil Defense and the Cold Spring Volunteer Fire Company.
An avid baseball player in Dutchess County for many years, he was inducted into the Dutchess County Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998. Also a softball player, he was both a player and manager in fast and slow pitch leagues in Cold Spring in the 1950's and 60's. In 1987, he and Buryl relocated to Scottsdale, AZ where they enjoyed the company of family and new friends. Dave was an avid bowler and won a gold medal in the Arizona Senior Olympics for his age group.
He is survived by six children: Judith Mazzetti (John) of Highland, NY, David M. Reilly Jr. of Gardiner, NY, Mary Johnson (Stanley) of Syracuse, NY, Kathleen Kaempfert (Volker) of Scottsdale, AZ and West Tisbury, MA, Christine Gale (Robert) of Phoenix, AZ, and Eileen Reilly of Vineyard Haven, MA. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Christine Jobson of New Paltz, NY, David Mazzetti of Wallkill, NY, David M. Reilly III of Gardiner, NY, Eric Reilly of Virginia Beach, VA, Jamison Hold of Fishkill, NY, Alison Mazzaferro of Vineyard Haven, MA, Janis Courter of Manchester, CT and Michael Courter of Chico, CA, and eleven great grandchildren, Carly and Liz Jobson, Reilly and Nia Mazzetti, David M. Reilly IV, Ryan and Dylann Ingrid Reilly, Griffon and Grant Hold, Sapphire Courter and Corrin Garraty. He is also survived by brothers John of Scottsdale, AZ, Robert of Phoenix, AZ, and sisters Ruth Lewis and Mary Turner of Gilbert, AZ, several nieces, nephews and cousins in New York, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Maine and Connecticut.
He was predeceased by his sister, Alice Reilly of Scottsdale, AZ, and three brothers, Donald Reilly of Boise, ID, Harry Reilly of Poughkeepsie, and Douglas Reilly of Clinton Corners.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 24, 2007, 10am at Our Lady of Loretto Church, 24 Fair St. Cold Spring, with interment at a later date. Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 23, from 4- 8 pm at Clinton Funeral Home, Cor. of Parrott & Pine Sts. (21 Parrott St) Cold Spring.
