Get Involved in Promoting Reading by Participating in Haldane's PTA's Parent as Reading Partners (PARP)

Parents as Reading Partners (PARP), a K-5 program sponsored by Haldane PTA and a grant from Target, encourages families to share the joys of reading together through literacy based activities and special events. The program, open to all Haldane elementary school children and their families, will take place from April 9th through April 26th. Everyone who enrolls receives a voucher to Merritt Books and is eligible for exciting raffle prizes, including Hudson Valley Renegades tickets. Families pledge to read together for 15 minutes each day for the duration of the program. Bookoriented activities and fun games, such as a literary scavenger hunt, are provided to use at home. Registration forms will be placed in children's backpacks at the end of March.

This year's program kicks off with an assembly, The Magic of Reading, in the Haldane Auditorium featuring acclaimed magician Terry Parrett on Wednesday, April 11th.

On Friday, April 13th, the greater Philipstown community is invited to Drop Everything and Read (DEAR). Join Haldane students and administrators, local pre-schools, day care centers, businesses and government officials, and take a reading break between 9- 9:30am.

During Author's Week, April 16-26, renowned authors and illustrators are scheduled to visit each grade. This enormously talented group includes author Jean Marzollo, New York Times environmental writer and author Andy Revkin, award-winning poet Jo Pitken, writer and illustrator James Yang, cartoonist Chris Duffy, and science fiction author Luisa Perkins.

Go on a Scavenger Hunt at the Julia L. Butterfield Memorial Library on Wednesday, April 18th at 3:30pm. Look for clues within the books and win prizes. Also at the Library, a Night of Reading will be held on Friday, April 20th at 6:30pm. Children may come in pajamas to listen to stories read by parents and other volunteers. Be sure to fill out a raffle ticket each time you check out a book throughout PARP.

The program concludes with an Ice Cream Party on Friday, April 27th in the Haldane Cafeteria for all who participated. Bring your Reading Log to enter.
