PARC to Host Concert for Children with Autism in Honor of National Autism Month
 | | Performer Lenore Troia |
| PARC, the leading provider of services for children and adults with developmental disabilities in Putnam County, will host "Songs For Autism - A concert for children with Autism" on Friday, April 20, 2007.
This evening of music, featuring artists from across the region and across the country, will raise funds to support PARC's preschool for children with Autism in Mahopac and PARC programs that serve the needs of these disabled young people.
Featured performers include the talented Lenore Troia, Bluesmaster Murali Coryell, pop/folk artist Bari Koral, all the way from Key West, David Feder, and comedienne Jane Bennett.
The show will be hosted at the Dockside Pub, Route 6N, Mahopac and kicks off at 7:30pm. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Doors open at 5pm for dinner and drinks before the show. Food and beverage will also be available during the concert.
"With the prevalence of autism on the rise, with 1 in 150 children in our country affected by this disability, funding for early education programs is needed now more than ever," said Rand Bridget Otten, PARC's director of development. "This concert will raise awareness about autism while raising money to support early education for young people with this disability."
The night will feature several hours of musical performances and will also include a live and silent auction with items ranging from dinner gift certificates to trips to Hawaii and Sonoma. The goal for the night is to raise $7,500 to support PARC's preschool and early education programs.
The night's noted musicians come from a variety of musical backgrounds, but were pulled together by Troia and Otten from each of their respective musical backgrounds. Lenore Troia volunteered to help PARC with this show after working with the agency over the past few years at a variety of fundraisers. All the way from Key West, Troia now lives in the Hudson Valley, and will share her American-Caribbean sound at the concert. Also from the Florida Keys, Troia friend David Feder will bring his unique Latin Jazz and Hillbilly Flamenco guitar stylings to this year's show.
Otten, the former music and entertainment reporter for The Poughkeepsie Journal and Gannett News Service, brings her past to this year's show, as she asked a few favorite performers, Coryell and Koral, from her days as a reporter, to join the fundraiser. Acclaimed by CNN, Rolling Stone, & The NY Times, soul singer/guitarist Murali Coryell has been blazing a trail that he was destined for before he was born thanks to the legacy of his famous father, jazz guitar legend Larry Coryell. Murali has played and toured with B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Over the course of five CD's, Murali has recorded the songs of Sam Cooke, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye as well as the Chess blues classics on "2120."
Bari Koral offers a truly new and unique take on the pop/folk brand. Called "an independent force on par with Ani DiFranco" by Time Out New York and "one of the best bands of the year" by Newsday, Koral's show will offer a soulful combination of great hooks and sassy lyrics.
Only 100 tickets will be available for this show. For tickets and information about this event, please call 845-278- PARC or log onto
