Student Art Shows at Garrison Art Center a Must See for the Entire Community.

It is time again when we highlight the creative talents of young artists throughout the region. Every year GAC hosts three consecutive exhibits that showcase a huge school-based theme project and a special group of students who participate in our Mentor Program.

The theme this year was called Surf n' Turf, Art that Covers the Earth. It was a lighthearted way to suggest landscapes and natural environments as opposed to the food association we are all familiar with. Please note that there are two openings for the theme show. The first show opening March 31st (3-5pm) is for participating high schools and it runs until April 15th. One week later, April 21 (2-4pm), we open with a show of work from participating elementary and middle schools which runs until May 6th. The Mentor show runs concurrent with the high school exhibit, March 31-April 15.

Garrison Art Center sends out invitations to art teachers in five surrounding counties and every year the response is a wonderful collaboration and array of ideas and skill. These lively and ingenious displays are a favorite for everyone because there is so much diversity and quirky interpretation of the theme. We encourage everyone to come enjoy the art and support the efforts of our teachers, schools and parents.

The Mentor Program is a unique opportunity for students to work closely with professional artists from the community on a focused project of their choice. The artists' volunteer to work with students in many different disciplines from painting to industrial design. They develop a specific work plan over a span of three months and the fruit of their efforts go on display in the art center. These shows are very thoughtful and rich in content as each student and Mentor exchange is distinctive. Please come and see these shows and support the efforts of the participants.

Garrison Art Center offers many other programs for artists and students of all ages. They have been part of the local fabric for forty years with programs and opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Visit their website at
