Jazz Pianist John Stetch Opens Chapel Music Season

Hailed far and wide for his imagination, virtuosity, brilliance and inimitable style, jazz pianist John Stetch will open the Chapel of Our Lady Restoration music series on April 15. The Sunday afternoon performance is at 4, and admission is free.

"A marvelously inventive pianist with dramatic flair and the chops to back it up," says Marian McPartland. "John Stetch makes a solo session sound like a crowded bandstand," The Philadelphia Inquirer, and "Wit, lavish ornamentation and quirky notions of which Monk himself would approve," Toronto Star. Stetch has appeared at the world's premier jazz festivals, including Montreal, Paris and Monterey, and, with his trio, at the Saratoga and Tanglewood jazz festivals and at the Manhattan club, Jazz Standard.

Attesting to his crossover appeal to classical audiences, Stetch has performed his original works with the Edmonton (Canada) Symphony. The debut release of Stetch's solo trilogy, "Ukrainianism," is "one of the best solo piano recordings in recent years," according to Down Beat magazine. It celebrates his heritage with a blend of jazz, classical and folkloric arrangements of melodies familiar from childhood. Next came "Standards," followed by "Exponentially Monk." His new CD, "Bruxin'," with his trio, showcases his original compositions, also released to raves. In 1998, Stetch won Le Grand Prix du Jazz du Maurier at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, and in 1993, he took second place in the Thelonious Monk Composer's Competition, with two of his works placing in the top twelve. He has been heard on National Public Radio and the CBC. He is a native of Edmonton, Canada, and lives in New York City.

The chapel is located at 45 Market Street, Cold Spring, and free parking is available on weekends at the adjacent Metro North Train Station. The music series is partially funded by the Putnam Arts Fund, supported by public funds from the county and administered by the Putnam Arts Council. Contributions are welcome.
