IBM Sells Engineering Careers to BOCES Students
Students in the Putnam/ Northern Westchester BOCES Business and Information Technologies Academy recently got an up-close and hands-on idea of what a career in Engineering might mean for them.
The students - currently taking Microcomputer Technology, Business Computer Technology, Telecommunications Technology, and Entrepreneurship/ Business Management - listened as four engineers from IBM's Research Division talked about the diversity and perks of an engineering job (like you can usually wear what you want!).
"The most important thing," said IBM researcher Matthew Duftler, "is to have a natural curiosity about how things work."
The students heard from each IBM representative and saw a short video about young people their own age who have already made an entrepreneurial impact in engineering technologies (the creator of Facebook, for example).
They ended the visit by tackling an engineering challenge - to build a structure with five sheets of paper than can hold the greatest number of textbooks.
The IBM visit made an impression on junior David Occhino, a Microcomputer Technology student from Carmel. "This made me interested in a lot of different aspects of engineering," he said. "It was cool to figure out an answer to a problem."
