USMA Concert Band Presents: "Young Artist Competition Winners"
The United States Military Academy Concert Band will present its annual "Young Artist Competition Winners" concert on Sunday, April 15 at 3pm in the Eisenhower Hall Ballroom. The featured soloists will be flautist Katie Klymko and percussionist Christopher Clarino. Some of the pieces to be played are Jupiter Jupiter from the The Planets by Holst, Prefatory Prayers by Leonard Bernstein, and Aaron Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man. This performance is free and open to the public.
Christopher Clarino, a senior at Walkill High School, is already a very accomplished musician, having won several awards as a pianist, horn player, and vocalist. In addition, he was chosen to be a mallet percussionist for the 2005 NYSSMA All-State Symphony Orchestra and the 2006 All-State Wind Ensemble. Chris is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to pursue college degrees in orchestral percussion and classical piano performance.
Katie Klymko began flute lessons in 2001 under the instruction of Barbara Koskos, and has since had opportunities to study with Lorin Lind (Philadelphia Orchestra) and John Wion (NYC Opera, retired). She has been a student in the Manhattan School of Music pre-college program for the last two years, studying flute under Dr. Susan Deaver. Katie has participated in numerous orchestral programs, attaining the position of principal flute in numerous orchestras. Katie, currently a senior at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, hopes to study music in college this fall.
