Cold Spring's Tony Moore Exhibits Sculpture at Brooklyn Gallery
Artist Tony Moore will exhibit his ceramic sculptures in a solo exhibition Tony Moore: Sculpture, In the Age of the Innocents at Galena Janet Kumatowski from Friday April 13 to Saturday May 5, 2007.
The opening reception is Friday April 13 from 7-9pm. There will be an Artist's Talk on Saturday April 28 at 4pm. The public is invited and admission is free. Gallery hours are Thu/Sat 1-7 and by appointment.
Tony Moore's new sculpture installation "In the Age of the Innocents" comprises 60 woodfired porcelain body-casts of the artist's head placed within a large rusted steel cage elevated horizontally above the ground. The bars of the cage do not physically restrain the release of the heads from the cage, but imply a metaphoric containment, or more specifically, the potential for "containment" or "release".
. Tony Moore's work is represented in international museum collections, including the Guggenheim Museum. The British-American artist is the recipient of a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, CAPS Grant and Sally and Milton Avery Fellowship. He received his MFA in Sculpture from Yale University.
After 25 yrs of work in NYC, Moore moved 50 miles north to Cold Spring in the Hudson Valley. In 1998, on a mountaintop property above the Hudson River he built an 18 ft long hybrid Anagama- Norborigama (Japanese style) wood-fire kiln. His unique clay sculptures are now arduously fired for one week in the kiln, which allows for the maximum flexibility in firing temperatures and optimizes both controlled and accidental impact from ash and other by-products of the wood-firing process. The transformation of clay through the alchemy of heat is metaphorically linked to his interest in all aspects of human existence, the actual demonstration of the interaction between flesh and spirit.
