DWI Stop Yields Stolen Putnam Valley Jewelry

Putnam County Sheriff Smith reports the March 22, 2007 arrest of Matthew Mechura, 23, of Wappinger Falls, New York, on DWI and stolen property charges.

According to the Sheriff, at about 12pm on March 22nd, Deputy Sheriff Andrew Kristan was on patrol along Oscawana Lake Road in the Town of Putnam Valley when he initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle operated by Mr. Mechura. During the stop, the deputy became suspicious that Mr. Mechura was under the influence of alcoholic beverages. Deputy Kristan's suspicions were confirmed when he administered standard field sobriety tests, which Mr. Mechura reportedly failed. As a result, Deputy Kristan arrested and charged Mr. Mechura with Driving While Intoxicated, a class A misdemeanor.

During the investigation, Deputy Kristan, who was assisted by Investigator Christopher Spiconardi, observed several pieces of jewelry in the vehicle. Further investigation revealed the jewelry was reported stolen by a Putnam Valley resident more than one year ago. In addition to the DWI charge, Investigator Spiconardi charged Mr. Mechura with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony.

Mr. Mechura was processed at the Sheriffs Office headquarters in Carmel and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility pending arraignment. If convicted of the felony charge, Mr. Mechura faces up to four years' imprisonment and a maximum fine of $5,000. The misdemeanor charge is punishable by up to one year in jail and a maximum fine of $1,000.
