April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month
April is the perfect month to treat your pet with a gift that could help save its life - a pet first aid class for you and a pet first aid kit for Tabby or King from the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/ GNY). Why April? Well, besides Animal Cruelty Prevention Month and Pets Are Wonderful Month, April also is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month.
"Pets are important members of many Putnam and West Point area families," said Michelle Strom, director, American Red Cross in Greater New York - Putnam/West Point. "With weather warming up, owners will be letting their pets outdoors and it is important that they know how to care for animals should an emergency occur while walking down the street, visiting the park, or traveling."
Pet First Aid - knowing that a pet is an important part of an owner's life, the American Red Cross added a pet first aid course that teaches the basics to help a pet during an emergency. Participants will learn how to identify and respond to choking, cardiac arrest, poisoning, seizers and other emergencies. With "people-friendly" cat and dog manikins, CPR skills are taught and practiced during the course.
ARC/GNY offers pet first aid courses for pet owners in Putnam and the West Point area, and in Orange, Sullivan and Rockland counties, and throughout New York City. To learn more, contact
American Red Cross Pet First Aid Kit ($20): From responding to open wounds to caring for injured bones on a furry friend, the pet first aid kit has everything an owner needs to help a pet during an emergency. Light and easy to store in the house or car, the kit is equipped with a trauma pad, gauze pads and roll, medical grade vinyl gloves, eye wash, penlight, eyedropper, hydrogen peroxide, swabs, antibiotic ointment, scissors, cold-pack and styptic pencil.
ARC/GNY provides immediate aid to more than 100,000 people affected by 3,000 emergencies a year, including fires, floods, building collapses and blackouts. Given the uncertainties of today's world, the chapter is accelerating its collaboration with partner agencies to develop and implement readiness plans to respond to major natural and man-made disasters. The chapter also helps New York residents and businesses prepare for emergencies by offering hundreds of courses in first aid, CPR and aquatics and free emergency preparedness training programs and resources.
ARC/GNY is not a governmental organization and relies on individual and corporate gifts, special events and grants from foundations and local, state and federal government to fund its essential programs and services.
