New York's Hudson Valley Tourism Business Grows

Hudson Valley Tourism, Inc. reports a continued boom in tourism, making the region one of the hottest in New York State. According to a recent study commissioned by the Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus of New York State, over 58,000 people were employed in tourism jobs in the 10-county Hudson Valley region at the beginning of 2006. Spending by tourists totaled over $4.5 billion in the same period.

Mary Kay Vrba, president of Hudson Valley Tourism, Inc., commented, "The growth of tourism is very beneficial to our local economies, with the Hudson Valley region realizing over $268 million in local taxes, benefiting small towns as well as larger cities. And, since most tourism is made up of small businesses, local shops on village main streets are also sustained by the influx of visitors to the region."

One sure sign of the tourism boom in the region is the number of new hotels that have opened during the last year. The Hudson Valley boasts 10 brand new hotels, adding over 1,000 rooms to the region's inventory, and more are planned. In 2007, at least 7 new hotels will open their doors, with additional hotels on the drawing board.

New York State has also rededicated its efforts to support the tourism industry by adding $1 million to the I LOVE NEW YORK budget for 2008. This year, promotional efforts include a new state Web site that will help travelers easily plan their trips to the wide variety of vacation areas that New York State offers.

Hudson Valley Tourism is also putting its marketing muscle behind the state-sponsored 2009 Hudson-Fulton- Champlain Celebration that has the valley's communities already planning their own festivities. The event celebrates the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's sailing up the river named in his honor; Samuel de Champlain's discovery of the body of water now known as Lake Champlain; as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton's steamship voyage along the Hudson River. The Hudson Valley region is planning to lay out a huge welcome mat for visitors coming to participate in this year-long celebration, attracting tourists internationally.

Hudson Valley Tourism, Inc. is the 10-county region designated by I LOVE NEW YORK to promote tourism for the area. Counties include Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Greene, Albany, Rensselaer, Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester. Regional information can be obtained from any of the county tourism offices, or by calling 8 4 5 - 2 9 1 - 2 1 3 6 . www.travelhudsonvalley.com
