Paschal Triduum at Our Lady of Loretto

The Pashcal Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) is the holiest time of year for Christians. Forty days of solemn preparation during the season of Lent culminates with our commemoration and celebration of Christ's Death and Resurrection during the Triduum and Easter.

All are invited to the Church of Our Lady of Loretto during the Paschal Triduum to pray an extraordinarily moving service called Tenebrae. Tenebrae consists of three sets of verses from the Lamentations of Jeremiah, chanted on Holy Thursday (April 5th), Good Friday (April 6th) and Holy Saturday (April 7th) - it begins at 8:15am on each day. The Latin word Tenebrae means "darkness." Tenebrae is a very ancient service of prayers in the Church, which traditionally took place during the darkness of night.

On the evening of Holy Thursday at 7:30pm, the Mass of the Lord's Supper will be celebrated. It is celebrated in the evening because the Passover began at sundown. After the Communion prayer, the Holy Eucharist is carried in procession through the Church and then transferred into a place of reposition in the Parish Hall. After the Mass of the Lord's Supper, we recall the Agony in the Garden, and the arrest and imprisonment of Jesus. The altar is stripped bare, crosses are covered. The Eucharist has been placed in the altar of repose, and the Church is open for silent adoration, to answer Christ's invitation, "Could you not then, watch one hour with me?"

On Good Friday, the anniversary of Jesus Christ's death, the whole Church mourns the death of our Savior. For Catholics, it is an obligatory day of fast and abstinence. Good Friday is observed through solemn services in the Church: Stations of the Cross at 12 noon, the hour Christ was crucified, and the Lord's Passion Service, including Veneration of the Cross, at 3:00pm, the hour Christ died.

Many ancient traditions also include a candle-lit evening procession. The Good Friday Procession at Our Lady of Loretto will begin at 7:30pm in the Church and will again focus on the symbols of Christ's Passion, carried by some of the children of the parish, as well as some of our High School students representing some of the Biblical characters of The Passion: the weeping women of Jerusalem, the legendary Veronica, who is said to have wiped his face with her veil, and others. All are welcome to participate.

The great Easter Vigil will be celebrated at 8:15pm on Saturday, April 7th. After several intensive weeks of preparation, this year four adults and one child will declare their profession of faith to the Catholic Church and receive the Sacraments of the Church. Mass on Easter Day will be celebrated at 7:30am, 9am and 11:45am at Our Lady of Loretto, and at 10:15am at St. Joseph's Chapel in Garrison. For more information, call the Parish Office at 265-3718.
