Putnam Valley Youth Arrested for Trying to Steal Bike
On March 29, 2007, Putnam County Deputy Sheriff Thomas Lewis was dispatched to Provost Road in Putnam Valley for a report of an attempted larceny. Upon arrival, Deputy Lewis initiated an investigation, which revealed that while the complainant was at his Meadowcrest Road residence when he heard his son yelling for him. The complainant ran outside to find his son trying to push another youth off his son's bicycle. The 16-year old youth, a resident of Putnam Valley, attempted to flee but the complainant managed to locate him on Provost Road. The complainant then contacted the Putnam County E911 Center to report the incident.
Further investigation revealed that while the arrested youth was passing the complainant's residence, he observed the bicycle parked in the backyard. Thinking the bicycle looked similar to his own, which was stolen several weeks earlier, he entered the yard and took the bicycle. After Deputy Lewis confirmed the bicycle belonged to the complainant's son, the 16-year old was arrested and charged with Petit Larceny and Trespassing. He was released on his own recognizance pending an April 10, 2007 appearance in the Town of Putnam Valley Justice Court.
Petit Larceny is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a maximum fine of $1,000. The trespass charge is a violation punishable by up to 15 days in jail and a maximum fine of $250.
