Putnam Valley's Eggstravaganza a Success
One by one, cars started their rapid ascent up the long driveway of the Elementary School. Doors opened quickly with children pulling their parents swiftly to be the first to get a glimpse of the long awaited Putnam Valley Parks & Recreation Department's Eggstravazanza. The entrance way opened to a land of fantasy. All you could see was three fields with illuminated dots glittering in the sun. A scene unfolded, as if someone had dabbed a paintbrush into vibrant colors and splashed them on a canvas. Monet would have been proud.
Over three hundred happy faces, some wearing fluffy rabbit ears, others carrying elaborate baskets, with each child focusing on that very special egg, which they had in their minds, claimed as their own. All anxiously awaited the sounding of the start. The suspense heightened until finally, the anticipated moment, Doreen Piacente's whistle echoed through the pounding feet of the stampede. Then within moments the once multi faceted field dissolved into green. Still, some children continue on, determined to find that special unspoken for egg encapsulating the prize ticket.
The task at hand was quickly shifted. Family and friends grouped, collected eggs were carefully spread out in front of them. Each treasured egg was carefully unfastened to reveal what lay within. One boy shook an egg next to his ear, as if to try and hear the sound of a prize ticket. Parents could not believe the number of eggs that all the children found. Little ones ran shouting "I found one! I found one!!!" to the prize table, manned by Phyllis Levesque and Michele Piechoniski, to claim their victory. The soft cuddly bunnies were generously donated by the Putnam Valley Lions Club, which also volunteered their help at the event.
The event concluded with children lining up, practicing to be the first to execute the egg race course flawlessly. Determined faces reflect the unwavering concentration, as they balanced an egg carefully on a spoon, during the many races that followed. Then Joe Piechoniski's voice could be heard announcing the drawing of the free prize basket raffles. The crowd quickly gathered around the raffle table, while each child listened carefully to hear if their name would be called. Tom Williams, Lions Club president, asked the children to create a drum roll while he pulled the winning tickets.
Theodora Moeller, the event coordinator, reminded everyone of the upcoming events. The Family Frog Walk April 15 (sponsored by the Environmental Commission and Co-sponsored by the Recreation Department), Teen Flashlight Treasure Hunt April 27, Touch a Truck May 5, Mother's Day Wild Flower and Bird Walk May 6 (sponsored by the Environmental Commission and Co-sponsored by the Recreation Department), The Creative Art Day May 19 (Co-sponsored by the Putnam Valley Arts) and the upcoming 2007 Sunset Series (www.PVSunset.com).
